In the current climate of increasing health and dental care costs, students on fixed incomes are particularly vulnerable. Each year, the costs of prescription drugs and basic health services take increasingly large portions out of the limited budgets of many students. To assist with costs, the Student Union operates group health and dental plans for its members.
All full-time students are enrolled in this plan when they register. Fees for the health and dental plans are collected in the fall and winter semesters. The health plan provides coverage for prescription drugs and paramedical services such as chiropractic, physiotherapy, and orthopedic services, as well as out-of-province travel insurance. The dental plan provides coverage for services such as exams, fluoride treatments, and cleanings. Complete details about the health and dental plans are provided in the GCSU handbook.
Students already covered under another health plan (i.e. a plan other than a provincial health care plan) may choose to opt-out of the Student Union plan to receive a refund of health and dental fees. As the Union’s plans include benefits specifically designed for students’ needs, retaining the coverage will increase your total coverage and further reduce health care costs.
Students can opt-out of the health and dental plans online by following the links on the bottom of this page. Students wishing to opt-out will be required to demonstrate proof of coverage by providing information about their existing plans including the name of the insurance company and the policy number. The deadline to opt-out is two weeks after the first day of classes. Please note that students who have already opted out of plan(s) will remain on the opt-out list for the remainder of their studies providing they maintain full time studies at Grenfell Campus. If a student reduces to part time status or attends any other campus of Memorial University or educational institute they are required to complete the opt-out process again. If a student no longer has alternate coverage, they can become a part of the plan(s) again. Contact the GCSU for more information related to opt-out and opt-in regulations.
Complete details about the health and dental plans are provided in the Student Union Member Handbook. To pick up a free handbook drop by the Student Union office. For more information, call the plan administrator at 637-6200 ext. 6225 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org.
